James Gaury founded the Merchant Bank de Gaury, La Rochelle, France
The Merchant Banking House of Gaury was La Rochelle’s go-to merchant bank for long-haul voyages. The House of Gaury provided venture capital on a purchase order mandate for long haul mercantile voyages originating from La Rochelle, sailing south around to the passage of Gibraltar through the Mediterranean Sea, making port and acquiring and trading goods in such active trading ports across North Africa such as Tripoli, Marakask, sailing south down the Nile to the Red Sea on to the Gulf of Aden over to India, Sri Lanka on to Burma trading goods throughout South East Asia with a final destination of the Orient!

La Rochelle
La Rochelle, located in the Charente-Maritime department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, has been a vital maritime hub since the Middle Ages. It was granted status as a free port in 1130 by Duke Guillaume X of Aquitaine, which catalyzed its rise as a center for trade, merchant banking, and naval provisioning.
Merchant Banking Families: The city’s prominence attracted those engaged in finance, salt trade, and colonial ventures, this was fertile ground merchant dynasties, such as the Gaury family. After 1700 known as the House of Gorée.

For 155 years, the Merchant Bank de Gaury grew to become the Mercantile Bank of La Rochelle as port activity increased and trade through La Rochelle expanded.

As King William III of England during this period had occupied North West France with his British troops fighting against King Louis XIV of France for territory and to prevent persecution of the French Huguenots within the areas of Bordeaux, Médoc, the strategic port of La Rochelle and regions of Normandy all that fell behind King William III defensive lines, as King Willian III troops began to succumb to the pressured of King Louis XIV troops in the late 1600’s, prompting William III to offer free passage to all French Huguenots on British ships to the New American colonies. With the impending overrun by Louis XIV's troops, the Gaury family took passage, landing at Jamestown, Virginia on July 01, 1700, at which time the Gaury family adopted the spelling of Gorée.
